Last week, Lars von Danwitz spoke on behalf of Ökoworld at the Annual General Meeting of Aurubis. The ongoing engagement is supported by SfC members Ethius and Ecofi as well.
Aurubis is a key player in copper recycling, a critical raw material for the energy transition. At the same time, parts of its supply chain are under increased scrutiny following reports of grievances in Peru and Chile.
With the engagement Ökoworld wanted to send clear signals: greater transparency is needed. A more detailed disclosure on the origin of copper would strengthen stakeholder trust, laying the foundation for credible sustainability.
Ökoworld welcomes the industry initiative “Copper Mark,” but believes it should be complemented by additional, company-commissioned and fully independent audits.
Ökoworld recommended to integrate the achievement of clearly defined climate targets in a binding manner into Executive Board remuneration.
The open dialogue with Aurubis is going on, and we now expect concrete improvements deeper down the supply chain.
