Swiss Re, deforestation and due diligence: a case with implications beyond Brazil

By on

Between 2016 and 2022, Swiss Re allegedly insured over 659,000 hectares of agricultural land in Brazil that had either been illegally deforested or overlapped with territories partially allocated to indigenous communities. The case, first revealed by investigative journalists in 2023, raised serious concerns about human rights, biodiversity loss and land conflicts.

Following further reported cases in 2024, SfC members Forma FuturaEthius InvestInyova and GLS Investments launched a joint initiative, issuing a public letter.

While the company has introduced technical improvements in its screening processes, investors remain concerned about the lack of meaningful remediation mechanisms and engagement with affected communities.

The case is particularly relevant in the broader context of the Mercosur debate, where environmental and human rights standards are under close scrutiny.

SfC members will continue their engagement, calling for stronger due diligence and concrete corrective action.
